G scale trains
Model railroaders come from all walks of life and they enjoy all different sizes of trains. The size of the train in model railroader terms are referred to as scales. One of the largest and the most popular is the G Scale. While it is possible to build or buy a larger model train, these are the largest of those sold most often. G Scale model trains refer to a models which is a 1:22 ratio. This means that type represents a scale that is one twenty-second the original size of the train. While these trains are large enough to enjoy the details, they are not too large to still enjoy around the home. That size was originally created by the Lehman Gross Bahn (LGB) company which was founded by Ernst Paul Lehmann Patentwerk.
The term for G Scale model trains has often been misrepresented. The common misconception is that G stands for garden size because of its use as an outdoor train. The term actually comes from its German roots from the word “Grose”, which means big. This size allows it to be very durable as well as having the ability to be waterproof. This makes the train ideal for outdoor use in many different kinds of weather. The media has made it a popular term to call garden train because hobbyists use natural landscapes in which to run their railroad through.
G Scale model trains run on a No. 1 gauge track. It is important at this point to note the difference between scales and gauges. You will sometimes hear people use scales and gauges interchangeably even though they refer to separate things. Scales are the size of the train. Gauge is the size of the track. No. 1 gauge track will sometimes be referred to as G Scale track. This misnomer, but since it is used quite often, it is important to know. A No. 1 gauge track is 45 mm in width and will work perfectly for your G type train. Brass is the most popular material for use with this scale because of its ability to handle the various weather conditions that will be subjected to. A simple wipe with a clean cloth is all that is necessary to give you a clean track to run your train. Other materials such as aluminum are available, but not as popular because of their susceptibility to corrosion.
Hobbyists will debate about which company produces the best models in any scales. Most will agree that the best companies for G Scale model trains in America are created by Aristocraft and Bachmann. All products by these companies can be found at hobby shop. Buying these size trains is recommended for those looking for a family activity as the trains are more durable than ones of smaller scales. Whereas an N or Z scales may be damaged from a child playing with them, a g size train can stand up to the abuse.
When deciding which size to buy, remember G Scale model trains are better suited to those with more room. If you have the room, you will enjoy the detail and durability it has to offer.
